Red Schoendienst was a part of four World Series champions in St. Louis. He manned second base in 1946, coached in 1964, managed the 1967 winners, and served as bench coach in 1982. He was also part of 1968 pennant winning Cardinals. The Cards retired 2 in his honor in 1990.
In addition to all that winning in St. Louis, Schoendienst was the secondbaseman on the only team that earned Hank Aaron a ring in 1957 (and the Milwaukee Braves team that returned to the World Series in 1958).
This photo shows Schoendienst when he was the St. Louis manager in 1969.
Nellie Fox is one of the players you see looking at you from the outfield wall at US Cellular Field. Chicago retired 2 in honor of their decorated secondbaseman. He made 10 All-Star teams and won three Gold Gloves as a Southsider. He also holds the distinction of being the first member of the White Sox to be named American League MVP (1959).
Corey Brewer wanted to wear his college number in the pros after being drafted 7th overall by Minnesota in 2007, but the Timberwolves retired 2 in honor of Malik Sealy, who played two seasons in Minny and was killed by a drunk driver in May 2000.
Why did Taylor Mays switch to 2? Because of defensive backs who went before him, Charles Woodson and Deion Sanders, whose 2 is retired at Florida State.
Nate Robinson will switch back to 4 with Boston because the Celtics retired 2 in honor of Red Auerbach. 2 signifies Auerbach as the second-most important person in Celtics history.
